.

In the May edition of the “Polymer Materials” magazine №5 (252) R&P POLYPLASTIC Head of R&D Mikhail Katsevman published a detailed article entitled “The state and prospects of development of the plastics procession industry”.

The author pays special attention to comparing the situation in Russia and around the world. The article underscores in particular the high pressure of media, politicians and ecologists demanding reduction of plastics consumption. Moreover, the European parliament approved a directive on restricting single used polymer materials. These trends may lead to a 1.5% decline in polymer materials consumption.

Meanwhile the Russian market is showing a certain increase which is attributable primarily to a lower consumption rate of plastics in comparison with European countries, China and the US. However, in the face of the coronavirus pandemic influencing all sectors of the economy it is hard to predict whether this growth will remain in force until the end of the year.

Among the major challenges of the Russian polymer industry Mikhail Katsevman mentioned poor availability of raw materials, principles of pricing policy aimed at short-term profit thinking, quality and range of crude products and low production efficiency.
